Veneers could just offer the perfect solution if you’d like to change both the shade and shape of your teeth within one treatment type.
High Street Smiles is a leading provider of veneers in Warrington. We help patients from across the North West to achieve their dream smile, including through the use of veneers.
If you are thinking about getting veneers, then allow us to explain more about how the process works.
What are dental veneers?
Dental veneers involve placing layers of material such as composite or porcelain over the front section of the tooth.
By adding these thin shells on top of the tooth, the visible shape and shade of the teeth can be transformed.
Think of veneers almost like getting gel or acrylic nail treatment. By adding material on top, the shape and colour of the nail can be visibly altered depending on your preferences.
Veneers work much the same, only the work takes place on your teeth!
Specifically, when your dentist applies the composite or porcelain veneer on top of your teeth, they can alter the shade and dimensions of each tooth. Their approach to the style of your veneers will be based on your preferences which will be discussed during the consultation.
Covering the front section of the tooth
The main thing to note about veneers is that they are a covering for the visible front portion of the tooth only. So, unlike a dental implant or crown, the aim is to only change how your teeth look from the front.
So why would you want to cover the front of your teeth?
Simply put, sometimes, the way our teeth look isn’t to our liking. This could be because of the way your teeth naturally formed, or due to damage or discoloration that has happened over time.
Given our teeth are on show every time we talk, smile or take a picture, being self-conscious about the appearance of our teeth can have a huge impact on self-esteem.
Therefore, veneers are one of the easiest ways to achieve a complete smile makeover, where the goal is solely to improve the appearance of the teeth.
What types of veneers are there?
Veneers are a fully customisable treatment. Not only do different materials exist, but the style of your veneers can also be tailored to your specific preferences based on how you want your teeth to look.
Starting with materials, the two most common options are composite or porcelain veneers.
The main difference is that porcelain veneers have a slightly higher aesthetic appeal and a longer average lifespan than composite veneers.
That said, if porcelain veneers are not within your budget, then composite provides another option to explore.
Additionally, feldspathic veneers can also offer an extremely natural look.
Your chosen veneer material can be crafted to suit your desired style, whether this is a natural approach or more of a Hollywood smile makeover.
What the procedure is like
At High Street Smiles, we always begin the veneer process by undertaking a consultation. This allows us to take a look at your teeth to check you’re a good candidate for veneers. In addition, we can run you through what getting veneers involves to make sure it’s the right treatment option for your needs.
If you decide to go ahead with veneers, we’ll take scans and impressions of your teeth to carefully assess the current shape of your teeth. From there, we can plan your treatment approach with your preferences in mind.
You’ll return to our practice for tooth preparation, where your dentist will remove a thin layer of the tooth enamel. This is to allow room for the veneers to be able to fit on top of the tooth.
Good to know: When performed by a competent dentist (i.e. regulated by the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry), veneers should always involve a minimally invasive approach to the tooth preparation procedure.
Unless same-day veneers are being performed, you’ll be fitted with temporary veneers. Custom fabrication then takes place in a lab to expertly craft your veneers.
Once ready, your permanent veneers will be fitted. This involves removing the temporary veneers before bonding the composite, porcelain or feldspar veneers onto the tooth.
The veneers are then cured under a light which attaches the bonding agent to the tooth. Your dentist will perform any final adjustments to complete your treatment.
The benefits of veneers
Veneers remain one of the most impactful ways to change the appearance of your teeth.
Capable of addressing teeth that are broken, chipped, discoloured, irregularly shaped or misaligned, veneers can offer an instant smile improvement.
Boasting excellent durability and stain resistance, veneers can last up to 10 years or more with the right care and attention.
The look of veneers is also fully customisable to your preferences, whether you want veneers to have a natural appearance or create a more prominent change to your smile. When your veneers are due for replacement, you can then adjust your approach to the shade and style of your smile if you prefer.
In terms of holistic benefits, veneers can make a profound difference in improving confidence and self-esteem. This is especially the case when veneers are used to address any aspect of your smile you are currently unhappy with.
Are veneers for you?
The best way to determine if you could benefit from veneers is to visit us for a consultation.
That’s because we need to ensure your teeth are suitable for veneers, and also that veneers offer the best option based on the issues you are looking to address.
In general though, veneers could be a good option for you if you have:
- Minor cosmetic imperfections (i.e. chipped or slightly irregularly shaped teeth)
- Gaps between teeth
- Discoloured teeth
Crucially, opting for veneers is ideal where other treatment types such as composite bonding or teeth whitening wouldn’t go far enough to address your concern.
