Abscess
If you have an abscess your dentist will need to make a small cut in the gums to drain the infection away. Depending on the source of the infection, additional treatment may be needed such as a root canal. Your dentist can also prescribe antibiotics to help kill any remaining bacteria.
Pain relief
When you have a dental emergency, over the counter medications such as paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen are usually sufficient. However, our dentists can also prescribe stronger pain relief for persistent or severe pain.
Extractions
Our dentists perform emergency tooth extractions in Warrington. The tooth may need to be extracted if it has suffered severe trauma and other methods cannot save the tooth. If we do need to extract the tooth, we can also provide follow-up treatments once the area has healed to replace the tooth if required.
Reimplant
If you are dealing with a knocked out tooth, an emergency dentist may be able to reimplant the tooth. This is provided the tooth is salvageable and has been kept in milk or saliva until you arrive for your appointment.
Managing your dental emergency
When you call us for an emergency dentist appointment, you will be given advice on how to manage your condition until you arrive at our dental practice.
If the issue is affecting your airway or you are unable to stop heavy bleeding, you must dial 999.
Otherwise, some top tips to manage your dental emergency include:
Knocked out teeth: Pick up the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the roots. Try to place the tooth back in the socket. If the tooth goes back in easily, gently bite down on a cloth to hold it in place. If you are unable to get the tooth back into the socket, place the tooth in milk or saliva.
Uncontrolled bleeding: Use gauze or a clean cloth to try to stop the bleeding.
Dental swelling or abscess: Create a cold compress by placing ice cubes in a towel and gently pressing this against the affected side of the face to relieve any pain or discomfort.
Beyond immediate measures to try to prevent the issue from getting worse, also think about any practical help you may need. For instance, you may need to arrange for someone to take you to your appointment and back home again.
Also, ensure you have any medications to hand, plus any other medication information that your dentist may need to know about.
