Despite tooth enamel being the hardest substance in the body, it is not completely immune to cracking, chipping or even breaking completely.

Teeth can break as a result of physical trauma, severe decay, bruxism or general wear and tear.

High Street Smiles provides a range of dental treatments in Warrington. For our patients who have experienced a broken tooth, a dental implant is one of several treatment options we may suggest.

In today’s post, our dentists are here to share some insights on whether a dental implant is needed if you break a tooth.

Please note: This post is intended as a guide to explain your options for repairing a broken tooth following an examination by one of our dentists. However, if you are currently experiencing a dental trauma including a broken tooth, then this is classed as a dental emergency.

Does a broken tooth need an implant?

Rest assured that just because a tooth has suffered damage, this does it mean you will automatically need a dental implant.

However, if your dentist feels that the tooth is beyond repair then an implant will likely be your best option to restore both the function and look of the tooth.

Specifically, ‘beyond repair’ is when the tooth has suffered a severe root fracture or has split in two.

Even if a tooth has only suffered minor cosmetic damage it’s important not to ignore it. That’s because the earlier your dentist can examine and repair the tooth, the more likely it is that a conservative option (i.e. a filling or composite bonding) can be suggested. Unfortunately, this may not be the case if you wait too long to address the damage to the tooth.

In instances where the tooth is completely missing, a dental implant doesn’t just restore the look of the tooth, but also provides necessary structure to the jaw. Therefore, it will also likely offer the best solution to prevent further problems from occurring.

To determine whether a dental implant or another option is the best treatment option for you, your dentist will examine the tooth and if necessary take x-rays to assess the level of damage.

Regardless of the severity of the issue, your dentist will want to repair the damage as soon as possible, especially if the tooth currently has any jagged edges which are causing you any discomfort. Likewise, if your bite has become misaligned.

How does a dental implant work?

Dental implants replace the entirety of a missing tooth. In other words, an implant spans the visible portion of the tooth above the gumline to where the roots of the tooth would normally sit below the gumline.

Comprising three main sections, dental implants are made up of an implant which is inserted into the jaw, an abutment which fits over the implant and finally the crown. Together, these three sections work as one to provide the look and function of a real tooth. Currently, dental implants offer the best technology available when in search of a solution to replace a missing tooth.

While the process of getting a dental implant can take a few months and also involves a considerable financial investment, the finished implant is designed to last indefinitely.

What are the alternatives to tooth implants?

As you might expect, the best alternative to getting a dental implant will depend on the specific issue you are experiencing, along with the overall severity.

Starting with extremely minor cracks, and fine dental cracks known as craze lines often don’t require any treatment at all. Though, more prominent craze lines can respond well to dental bonding to conceal their appearance.

However, if the tooth is cracked or chipped, then various treatments exist to repair the areas of damage. Specifically, in cases where the damaged tooth can be saved completely or at least to a degree.

Composite bonding

Composite bonding is ideal for fixing minor imperfections such as chipped teeth. Often likened to an art form, composite bonding is a highly skilled process as your dentist works to carefully reshape the tooth with composite material.

Crucially, composite bonding involves adding layers of material to the tooth rather than taking anything away. This means the process is completely painless and follows a non-invasive approach.

Once your dentist has restored the look of your tooth, the composite will then be cured under a light.

With the right care and attention, composite bonding can last up to 10 years before needing to be redone.

Composite fillings

In cases where the damage to the tooth is affecting its structural integrity, it may be possible to have a composite filling to strengthen the tooth.

Composite fillings are preferred due to their highly aesthetic appeal. While usually associated with repairing cavities, composite can also be used to fix cracked, worn or broken teeth.

Crowns

Another way of repairing structural damage to a tooth is to fit a crown.

With a crown, your dentist will look to remove the damaged part of the tooth. However, the roots and some of the natural tooth structure will remain so that the crown can be placed on top. This is one of the major differences between a crown and a dental implant, as a dental implant would instead replace the entire tooth structure down to the roots.

In cases where it’s not possible to repair the tooth with a filling, a crown can add some much-needed structure and support to the tooth. In particular, crowns are a great choice for broken teeth towards the back of the mouth that are responsible for chewing.

Since crowns sit on top of the natural tooth underneath, they can simultaneously protect the remaining tooth while also providing the necessary functionality to be able to chew.
