What is a crown?

A crown is a type of restorative dental treatment that is performed to protect a weak tooth, hold a dental bridge in place or enhance the appearance of a tooth.

Sometimes referred to as a dental cap, dental crowns involve placing a custom made structure that resembles a real tooth over the natural tooth.

Despite the name, a crown doesn’t just cover the top of the tooth but the entire visible tooth structure, all the way down to the gumline. This ensures a crown not only looks like a real tooth, but most importantly provides the functionality that a real tooth would.

How do crowns work?

Dental crowns are placed on top of the natural tooth to enhance how the tooth looks while also providing extra support.

While it is sometimes possible to have what’s known as a ‘same day crown’, the process of getting a crown will usually happen over two appointments. Prior to this, you will first come in for a consultation to our Warrington clinic to check that a dental crown offers the best solution for you.

If you decide to go ahead, you will visit us again for the first main appointment for dental crowns.

During this appointment, your Warrington dentist will carefully examine the tooth. Scans and impressions will also be taken so that your crown will offer a custom shape and fit.

The natural tooth will then be prepared, which involves filing down the tooth so that your crown will eventually be able to fit into place on top.

You will be given a temporary crown while your permanent crown is being made. Once your crown in Warrington is ready, you’ll return to have it fitted during a second appointment.

Crowns can last for between 10 to 20 years before they need replacing. However, with the proper care, they can potentially last for much longer.

Dental crowns Warrington FAQs

Do crowns hurt?

The process of getting dental crowns isn’t painful. You will be given local anaesthetic along with a special numbing gel for the gum beforehand.

Rest assured your dentist will check in with you to ensure that you are comfortable, and will continue to take excellent care of you throughout the procedure.

You may experience some temporary discomfort or sensitivity following the fitting of the crown. This is completely normal and should disappear after a few days. If necessary, you can take some over the counter pain medication.

If you have any worries about getting crowns done, please let us know during your consultation. Your dentist would be more than happy to explain the process and put your mind at ease.

What are crowns made of?

Dental crowns can be made from a variety of materials.

At High Street Smiles, we offer either Zirconia (ceramic) or Emax (porcelain) crowns.

One of the reasons why we have two material options is that it allows us to choose the best solution based on where the crown will be positioned. Since all teeth have a slightly different function, this ensures the crown will offer the right properties.

Emax crowns are typically used for the front teeth as they have a higher aesthetic appeal.

Zirconia crowns are used for the back teeth because they provide additional strength and stability for chewing. If you grind your teeth (bruxism), then a Zirconia crown may also be recommended to provide enhanced protection to the tooth.

Following a consultation, your dentist will be able to advise you about which material would best suit your needs.

How long does the dental crown procedure take?

From consultation to completion, the process of getting dental crowns can take 2-3 weeks.

If you decide to go ahead with a dental crown, then you will have a first appointment which will last around 90 minutes. During this visit, your dentist will take all of the scans and impressions needed and also prepare your tooth for a crown.

An advantage of doing all of the work during the first appointment is that when you return to have your permanent crown fitted, the process will be much quicker to complete. On average, it will take just 20 to 30 minutes to fit the crown and cure it into place.

Some patients may be getting multiple crowns fitted, or require additional work relating to getting a crown. In this case, your Warrington dentist will be able to give you a tailored answer about how long everything will take so that you will know what to expect.

How much do dental crowns cost?

Emax or Zirconia dental crowns at our Warrington practice are priced from £795.

Our dentists also offer the recementing of crowns for £130. You may require this treatment if you have an existing crown that has become loose. The treatment involves removing the loose crown, cleaning the tooth surface underneath and then reattaching the crown back into place.
